Trotley

Sees best up close

Hazel

A cow who sees best up close. Very, very close.

Hazel, a dark gray cow with a white band around her middle, pushing up her thick turquoise glasses with one hoof.

Hazel is a young cow with a dark gray coat, a wide white band around her middle and thick turquoise glasses. She lives in the pasture on the other side of the hill, and she is the politest cow you will ever meet. She says good morning to everyone. And to everything. “Good morning, Mr. Bucket! Lovely day!”

Far away, the world is a little blurry for Hazel. A bale of hay can look just like Trotley, and she is absolutely sure it's him. But up close, nothing gets past her. She spots the tiniest details, and her nose can find almost anything.

When she mixes something up, Hazel just laughs, pushes her glasses up with her hoof and says, “Hmm… let me take a closer look.” And very often, her mix-ups lead to the best discoveries.

You might be a little like Hazel if…

  • …you notice tiny things everybody else walks right past.
  • …you say hello to your toys (and maybe to the mailbox).
  • …you were SURE it was your friend… and it was a coat on a hook.

For grown-ups

Hazel is kind to everyone and everything, and she notices what the rest of us walk past: the tiny detail, the smell of rain. She wears her glasses proudly. When she mixes something up, she laughs and takes a closer look, and it usually leads somewhere good.

Read together, then ask: What's something you can only see when you get really close?
