Trotley

The quiet one who hears everything

Tuffet

A shy little lamb who hears what nobody else hears.

Tuffet, a fluffy cream lamb with one black ear and a lilac colored pencil behind the other ear, with a button in her wool.

Tuffet is a little lamb with fluffy, cream-colored wool, one black ear and a lilac pencil tucked behind the other ear. She's shy. She speaks softly and not very often, and when everyone leans in to hear her, she sometimes curls up into a perfect, puffy cushion.

But Tuffet hears what nobody else hears: a tiny sound in the grass, a friend who got left out, someone who's feeling a little sad. When the words won't come, she takes out her pencil and draws what she means. Very often, her drawing is the answer.

Lost things have a funny way of turning up in her wool, and she has no idea how they got there. Her friends never rush her. They wait, they smile and they make room. That's all she needs. Tuffet is just right as she is.

Tuffet loves to peek out from behind things. If you've read What's Over That Hill, Trotley?, look at the pictures again: she was there all along.

You might be a little like Tuffet if…

  • …you'd rather draw it than say it.
  • …you hear tiny sounds other people miss.
  • …you like to watch for a while before you join in.

For grown-ups

Tuffet is quiet, and she is exactly who she is in every story. Her friends wait, make room and listen. She hears the small sound, notices who's been left out, and answers with a drawing. A lot of families will know a Tuffet.

Read together, then ask: What would you draw for Tuffet?
